This year, our friend has been praying and searching for her whakapapa connections and freshly discovering her identity as Māori. She found out that she was from Te Hiku O Te Ika Marae and we decided to take her back there. We didn't tell anyone and just showed up. The whānau there welcomed us and showed us nothing but love and manaaki the whole way. They did a little karakia and whakatau for her, and welcomed her back home, even those this was her first time there. It was so beautiful. They gave us a kai and took us up to the urupā and she found all of her tūpuna in the urupā. Brought us to tears. She is Ngāti Kurī through her mum's line, but she passed away 4 years ago, so this gave her a connection to her mum that she's never had before. She's the first from her family in 2 generations that has returned back to her Marae. It was definitely a wairua thing. We will forever be grateful. Ka nui te aroha ki a koutou ❤️
