We’ve had a wonderful experience with Portobello Early Learning Centre in Kaiapoi. After visiting several daycares in the area, this one stood out straight away and we’re so glad we chose it for our daughter.
One of the things we love most is the outdoor, kiwi backyard–style playground. It feels natural, spacious and really encourages exploration and confidence. The teachers genuinely connect with the children and create a warm, supportive environment.
The centre feels very whānau-focused, with photos of families displayed on the walls, which makes it feel welcoming and personal. The learning journals are beautifully done and clearly tailored to my child, showing real thought and care in her learning and development. We also get regular, meaningful feedback from the teachers about how she’s doing, which gives us a lot of reassurance as parents.
Overall, Portobello feels nurturing, thoughtful, and genuinely invested in the children. We feel very lucky to be part of such a supportive and caring centre and would happily recommend it to other families in Kaiapoi. 💛

We absolutely love Portobelo Kaiapoi and couldn’t speak more highly of the team. The teachers are amazing and have built such strong, genuine relationships with our child and our whānau. They truly take the time to know each child as an individual.

Our wee boy is so excited to attend every day, which really speaks volumes. Jo & Siobhan are always so approachable and are incredibly accommodating! I love that each child is at the forefront of their teaching and care. We feel so confident knowing our child is valued, supported, and happy in such a nurturing environment. We’re very grateful to be part of this wonderful preschool community and highly recommend it!

Portobelo has become our families second home. I’m lucky enough to be a Kaiako here but also get to watch my daughter enjoy her days here also. All the staff are caring and dedicated to building meaningful and nurturing relationships with all the tamariki and families. Transitioning my daughter into centre has been a breeze as the kaiako built such beautiful connections with her and made her feel safe and secure. She loves coming to centre each day and we notice so much growth in her confidence and social skills as she explores her environement and engages in meaningful learning and play that the kaiako facilitate. Everyday is exciting and she loves arriving to see what is happening for the day. We love Portobelo!
