Absolutely appalling treatment of my father including his final hours of life in the cardiac unit 27th Feb 2026. Prior to this we'd recently been advised that a scan done May 2024 detected cancer but was never followed up by anyone at this hospital. Therefore no diagnosis or treatments were done. On 24.11.25 (Dads birthday)my parents were advised by a respiratory specialist in this hospital that he was terminally ill with stage 4 cancer. A formal complaint was lodged to the DHB and ACC for medical harm . There has been no response to the letter to the DHB from them to this day . Monday 23.2.26 Dad was admitted to hospital and was supposed to have a scan that night. By Tuesday evening he'd had 2 Blood transfusions. Terrible pain in his stomach for days and severe bruising .Given panadol & buscopan. We demanded scans on his stomach . An endoscopy was done but didn't identify the acute pain in the abdomen source. We demanded more scans on the lower abdomen which took 2 more days . At 10pm Thursday 26.2.26 Dad had the scan. He had a perforated bowel. We were called to hospital at midnight and told he had hours to live. We as family members witnessed his horrific painful death up until his final breath on Friday 27th February 2026 . He was in the cardiac unit and we had to demand multiple times for appropriate medications to be administered. Despite being told he would have a pain free end of life experience it was not even close. We are traumatised by what we saw and the incompetence of the doctors.
Our gentle father and husband didn't deserve to die this way and this Hospital is in dire need of competent staff.
This treatment was abysmal

My first involvement with the hospital today was terrible. I got to my appointment in plenty of time only to find that there was no record of an appointment for me today. I handed over my appointment letter to be told by the receptionist that my appointment has been rescheduled to Friday. Whilst things like this happen I expect to be told before I make the drive to Hastings. I don't live around the corner. You need to do much better than this and dont have people turning up unnecessarily.

Such a high degree of professionalism. Theatre & Surgical Staff were amazing! Certain sections of the hospital could do with an upgrade however the experience as a whole was very pleasant.
